Miami Vice

“Every time I watch a popular television narrative [like Miami Vice], I have to pinch myself and remind myself that these narratives are not a somewhat distorted reflection of the real state of race relations in American cities. They are functioning much more as Levi-Strauss tells us myths do. They are myths, which represent in narrative form the resolution of things, which can’t be resolved in real life. What they tell us about is about the ‘dream life’ of a culture” (Stuart Hall, p. 92)
